Description
Joining NETGEAR's family of Smart Switches with simple switch management at no extra cost, this 1U high, 48-port Gigabit switch maximizes bandwidth and density for great value and capability. With 48 10/100/1000 Mbps ports, each capable of powering 2000 Mbps of data throughput in full-duplex mode, plus four optional fiber ports, it provides a 40 Gbps backbone and connects servers or power users, delivering large amounts of multimedia, image, and video information in no time at all. Standards-based, it is ideal for combining 10, 100, and 1000 Mbps devices, as it delivers automatic speed and full/half-duplex sensing plus Auto Uplink on every port. Four hot-swappable Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP)** GBIC slots provide optional fiber connectivity for greater distance. An intuitive, web-browser interface offers simple switch management, making it a snap to monitor switch performance, configure ports, even set up trunks, VLANs, and prioritization.

Strengths: Cheap, works great for simple configurations
Weakness: web interface doesn't work with Mozilla Firefox, VLAN support breaks easily
I bought three of these switches. Two are working fine trunked together. The other I needed to configure with VLANs. After removing the testing VLAN, I couldn't add my production ones to the switch. I swapped hardware and was able to get it working, but after a power outage it was no longer passing data between tagged and untagged ports. After trying a factory reset I couldn't add my VLANs back...
Strengths: Easy setup utility, worked great out of the box. Good network speed across all ports. Works great in hot environments.
Weakness: None
I use this in my office of 28 people. We use VMWare and all our images are on a file server. On average an employee will download about 12 gigs a day. It now takes them only 15 minutes to download 12 gigs. What a convenience.

HOT and Not In A Good Way
Strengths: Web interface (IE only), decent VLAN configuration, cheap
Weakness: Poor or wrong documentation, only IE works with web interface, MAJOR heat problems, vents out SIDE not the back, stability issues
In my experience I have had several problems with Netgear equipment and this product is no different. Unfortunately this time I did not get to choose the switches for my project. The major problem with this switch is its heat issues. The switch gets very hot very fast and unfortunately vents out the SIDE. This means if you have racks side by side, the switch will start to cook whatever is in the...
