Pefect for Landscapes

Strengths: Quality, very sharp

Weakness: price

I used to have a 28-135mm and I replaced it with a set of 3 lenses: 70-200mm IS L, 50mm f1.4, and this wonderfull wide angle lens.

I'll take it anytime I need a wide angle for landscape. The lense is pefectly sealed like any other L lens and during my trip to Grand Canyon and espcially Antelope Canyon no sand or dust found their way in.

I also took it to my Mt Whitney hiking trip and it produced exzceptional pictures, coupled with my Canon 20D.

Highly recommended for any landscape.

Canon 17-40mm F4 L

Strengths: Light weight, Very sharp, Amazing colors, Excellent build quality

Weakness: For the price, none

I would consider this is a "must-have" lens for Canon digital camera owners, especially good for 300D/350D/10D/20D. 17-40mm turns out to be around 27-64mm on a 1.6X body, which makes it a very nice workaround lens.

The lens is very sharp. Autofocus is extremely fast and quiet. Colors are just amazing on this lens. It has a warm tone, which I find very pleasant. Typical L glass build quality - very solid.

Together with another wonderful 70-200mm F4 L, they should be in every Canon fan's camera bag.

Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultra Wide

Strengths: Rapid, quiet focusing. Clear, sharp images

Weakness: None

This is one of the most affordable Canon L lens, and it's generally a good buy for a wide angle lens, especially for the digital SLR owners with the 1.6x factor. The lens produces sharp clear images, and fabulous colours. It is a good "walk-around lens" for travel photography. The construction and build is nice, unlike some of the cheaper plasticky lens bodies...

Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultra Wide Zoom Lens

Strengths: Sharp images. Solid construction. Constant maximum aperture (F4.0) through zoom range.

Weakness: Not found so far.

This lens is well constructed. It feels solid in hand.
Pictures are sharp. Focusing is fast. Color and contrast are superb. Excellent choice for Canon digital SLRs
with 1.6x sensor (10D, 20D, etc). I had some pretty nice enlargements coming out of it.

Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultra Wide Zoom Lens

Strengths: Extremely quiet and fast focus due to it's special USM design. Internal zoom and anti dust design make it function under nearly all environment. Super UD glass guarantees the best image clarity.

Weakness: I can't find any. Somebody said the lens is not fast enough (F4 L). But how frequently do I need F2.8?

Once I bought this lens, it always stays on my 10D and 20D. The best deal for digi cameras with 1.6 factor. From any angle, this lens is worth buying.

Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultra Wide Zoom Lens

Strengths: Extremly sharp images, very fast autofocus

Weakness: none

I've been using the DRebel for over a year with a Canon 28-135IS. I was needing a lens with a wider angel and picked up this lens due to its great reviews. I was not disappointed. The image quality is just stunning and with the 1.6 crop factor of the DRebel results in a very usable wide angle range. The autofocus of this lens is extremly fast. My 28-135 has been replaced by this as my everyday walkaround lens for the DRebel.

My experience with this lens and the 350D.

Strengths: Excellent build quality, silent and fast focus, not much lens flare, fairly sharp at f/4 and very sharp at smaller apertures like f/8, good walkaround lens on a 1.6 crop dSLR like the 350D and 20D.

I'm very satisfied with this lens on my Canon Rebel XT (350D). On a 1.6 crop digital SLR like the 350D, the 17-40 f/4L is no longer a super zoom like it is on full frame 35mm film cameras and the much more expensive digital SLRs. Instead, it's a very usable 27-64 mm zoom. I find that I use this lens for a wide variety of shots which includes landscapes, architecture, portraits, etc. It really is a great walkaround lens on my 350D. The build quality is solid and the size of this lens isn't too big, even on the compact 350D. The sharpness and colors this lens produces is awesome. Considering the quality of this L lens, it's also well-priced.

Supposedly, the included lens hood isn't very useful on a 1.6 crop dSLR, but it still works well for me. I'm told that there are other hoods made for other lenses that will fit on this lens and do a better job, but I have yet to try that out. Beware that using a different hood will likely cause heavy vignetting on a full frame SLR. Also, the supplied hood does take up a lot of space in storage. You can attach it on the lens in reverse, but the wide petal-shaped design means it will still require a wide area for storage.

Down the road, when full frame dSLR cameras are cheaper and plentiful, I do plan on upgrading to one. Even then, I intend on keeping this lens as it will do a good job of covering the super wide angle range.

Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultra Wide Zoom Lens

Strengths: sharp image

Weakness: price??? Lens hood is very loose. I'm afraid it will fall off someday.

Very sharp image. Light weight compared to 17-35mm 2.8 version. Only half of the price to 2.8 version. Probably one of the most cost-effective L series lens. But the price is a little bit higher than 70-200 f4.

Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultra Wide Zoom Lens

Strengths: Excellent color, contrast, AF speed, build quality. Good sharpness.

Weakness: Not as sharp wide open, Barrel distortion at 17mm, slight pincushion distortion at 40mm

I have been using this lens for almost 3 months, the lens is absolutely best wide angle lens I have ever owned. It has excellent color, contrast, AF speed, build quality. Sharpness is a bit soft wide open especially in corner, but it improves significantly from f/5.6 to f/11.

This lens is Canon L series lens, as other L lens, you will get supplied hood and carrying case in the package and also the red stripe on the lens barrel! ;)

I noticed noticable barrel distortion at 17mm and slight pincushion distortion at 40mm. So at extreme wide, make sure you won't put your subject in the corner of the picture ;)

Overall, I am very pleased with the result from this lens. It deserves that red ring.

Canon Zoom Super Wide Angle EF 17-40mm f/4L USM...

Strengths: This is an excellent lens. Sharp and excellent colour

Weakness: Like all "L" series lenses I think they are too expensive but then what isn't in photography

If you have a Canon Rebel or something similar and still have the kit lens or a basic lens and want to up grade to the next level this is the lens to aim for very easy to use in all modes

The Vanishing Lens

Strengths: Basically, none for me.

Weakness: Negligent customer support from Canon Canada. They actively hid the fact that they lost my lens when I sent it in for repairs.

Sent my lens in for them to have a look at. Three weeks later I call to find out when they'll be done, and was told no one was availble to take my call, and left a message. Didn't receive a reply after three days waiting, called again and left another message. This went on for two weeks with me leaving messages and them not returning them. Finally complained in a fax to the President of Canon Canada, and got an email from the repair facility that day saying they'd get to it right away. A week after that, they send me an email telling me they lost the lens. In the end, they sent me a cheque for less than replacement value. I've told my story in many photo forums, and it appears, my case is not that unusual.

Canon EF 17-40mm wide angle

Strengths: Weight, convenience, price

Weakness: Slow in low light and a bit soft at zoom end

This is a nice complement to my primes. Contrast is decent thought I found some softness at the zoom end -- perhaps because I've been used to primes. Color is superb. Vignetting is not noticeable even with a circular polarizer mounted (I use low profile Hoya warm polar filter - highly recommended for this lens due to performance vs price). Overall, it's a perfect lens for travel.

Canon 17-40mm f/4L Lens

Strengths: Light weight, sharp focus in all light levels, fast focus, low price.

Weakness: Could use more measurement marks on its focus ring.

This is a great lens. I have tested it on several weddings and it performed great. It focuses very quick and silently in any light level. It doesn't take up too much space in my camera bag. I like to preset the focus on a given distance and this is the only problem with this lens. It doesn't have many measurement marks for feet.

Camera Labs – Canon EF 17-40mm with 5D review

The EF 17-40mm f/4.0L is one of the best lenses in Canon’s range. It brings you a taste of the truly exotic with ultra-wide coverage, while boasting ‘L’ quality all at a surprisingly affordable price. Sure it ain’t exactly cheap, but it’s considerably more affordable than the EF 24-105mm f/4.0L and almost half the price of the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L. On the downside, our samples were quite...
