Strengths: Very easy to use. Great capture quality.
Weakness: None.
A friend of mine recommended this brand for me to use in capturing to Final Cut Pro. I was trying to find a way to get DVD to FC to edit, but after using a few extracting softwares I gave up. Only until a friend recommended this product and it worked like a charm. I have a Mini-DV/VHS combo deck that for the longest time I couldn't get to work. Ever since I purchased this product I have been able to make use of my deck that was just collecting dust for the past months. I have used the Canopus converter to capture mini-dv, vhs, and dvd. I have had no problems with using this converter. Great buy for any video editor.

TopStrengths: Bundled Edius software, no drivers required (plug and play), Allows input as well as output of signals
Weakness: Price, No power adapter (6pin firewire port needed to supply power), No component option. Documentation is a bit lacking
I wanted a capture product that I could use to capture video from my video game console and to be able to create DVD copies of my old VHS tapes. The bundled Edius software was a surprise. This product performs exactly as advertised. Audio is always in sync. Transfer quality is superb. You wont even remember the price you paid for it because it works so well. This is a great investment if you have loads of VHS tapes that need transferring. Dont bother with cheaper alternatives. You won't regret the purchase

TopStrengths: Small, easy to use.
Weakness: No included software.
I needed a good video converter to convert my old home videos from VHS to DVD and after doing a lot of research this came out on the top. It is a little expensive but it works flawlessly. It doesn't come with any software but I already had Adobe Premiere Elements and it worked right of the box with it.

TopStrengths: Compact size and very easy to use
Weakness: I would like it to include an AC adaptor even though it is powered off the firewire cable. Manual adequate.
I looked into this device online and in stores several times and found it to be the best and most simple way to convert my old vhs tapes to digital files in iMovie on my Mac G4 laptop. The size of the files creates a storage problem so I dump them to my 300 gig external Hardrive. I probably should burn them to DVD as a backup. This device is very simple to use and has some flexibility with the dip switches. If I had it to do over again I might consider the ADVC-300 with time base correction for more stability on old tape transfers.

TopStrengths: Basic setup and use is quite easy; powered by 6-pin Firewire cable which is included
Weakness: Doesn't come with audio/video cables so had to go buy these before I could use it
I ordered this product to use in video editing with Final Cut Express on an iMac G5. Based on other recommendations, I decided to give this product a try and it seems to be exactly what I need to play my FCE projects on an attached monitor which means I don't have to work through my DV camera. The basic setup is quite simple and straightforward. There are some options you can set by turning DIP switches on/off which I haven't tried, but there is a basic explanation of these in the accompanying manual. I like the fact that this product, at least with my iMac, is powered by the included Firewire cable, so there's one less AC adpater to find a plug for. So far, I am pleased with this product.

TopStrengths: Unbelievably simple to connect and use. Great video quality too!
Weakness: None.
I purchased this device to convert all of our old VHS videotapes to digital video, so we could back up our family videos to DVD. This converter, using my PowerMac G5, made the process simple, quick, and guaranteed we will have our home videos forever.

TopStrengths: Easy to use.
Easy to use and set up, once you figure it out. I am not an expert by any means and was able to figure out how to use it relatively easily.

Great device for converting footage from VCR or DVR...
Strengths: Very simple to use. Hookups in the front and back depending on what you want to do. You also get a 3 year warranty from a reputable brand in Canopus.
Weakness: Manual is very basic, but does the job. Otherwise I can't really think of any weaknesses.
If you are wondering about the size and weight of the ADVC-110, it's roughly 5x5 and not even a pound. Very small and the firewire cable included is only 3 feet long, which might be a problem for some people.
Quality is very good. If you have beat up VHS tapes, you may want to consider the 300 model.
If you are converting footage from your DVR or VHS tapes with decent quality, you should be very happy with the results.
One last note. When I was researching the ADVC-110 people kept saying that you have to have a fast hard drive or you will get dropped frames. This is not really true. I use my 110 with a notebook computer with a 5400rpm hard drive, and once in a while it might stutter while pulling footage in Imovie, but most of the time it is perfect, audio and video in sync, and no dropped frames. Pausing, rewinding a lot may impact the stuttering with slower hard drives.
