f/2.8 - MPN: 0284B002
Strengths: sharpness, speed of focus
Weakness: low light (ie. not sunshine) -- has difficulty with focusing
I would recommend NOT using a filter on this lens. I know, I know, but with a macro, you have ultra-sensitive focus points.
If you're outside, this is a GREAT lens!!

TopStrengths: Extremely sharp. It can actually serve two purposes for you: macro and portrait. Lighweight and well built
Weakness: None, except for EF-S mount, not compatible with full frame cameras.
The lens is extremely sharp. If you have the small sensor camera - definitely go for it. Do not forget the lens hood also (does not come as a part of the package).

TopStrengths: This gives me the close-up details of wedding rings that I've been needing.
Weakness: Can't find any.
Overall, it's another awesome Canon lens. I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to do macro photography. For wedding photographers using digital cameras like the Canon 20D/30D, this is the right lens for the job.

TopStrengths: Sharp, macro 1:1, portraits
Weakness: Can hunt in low light
Very pleased with this acquisition. It takes macro work up a couple of levels over the kit lens, and the bokeh is a creamy blur. There are the usual challenges with getting correct focus with such a narrow depth of field, but that's to be expected.
I'd buy this again.

TopStrengths: Very sharp. 1:1 ratio available. Full-time manual override.
Weakness: AF hunts in low light. Lens hood not included.
Only used the lens for a couple of days, but I can foresee no problems. The lens produces excellently sharp pictures; the AF sometimes has trouble but it's not a big deal. Decent price. Highly recommended.

TopStrengths: portrait lens w/ macro capability
Weakness: none
I was looking around for a good, reasonably fast portrait lens for my Digital Rebel when I came across this lens. With an effective 96mm focal length, it fit my portrait needs exactly and gave me great macro capability (1:1) as a bonus. The macro shotsare incredible with the 8 inch minimum focusing distance! Wow! Caution--this lens only fits on Digital Rebels and the 20D or 60d.

TopStrengths: Sharp, Macro, 1:1, Solid
Weakness: Expensive
I just got this lens to match my Rebel XT and am very pleased after taking several dozen macro shots and portraits. It's great to be as close as 4" away from the subject to get that 1:1 lifesize shot. The lens focuses quickly and produces extremely sharp pictures. It's also very solidly built with a metal mount and ultrasonic motor.
The only true downside is the cost--this lens is really expensive! Actually, all Canon lenses are really expensive except for the kit lenses. Even more expensive is the matching macro ring light, which costs even more than the lens! I'm thinking I won't bother getting the lens hood for this, as that would block even more light, and the macro ring light is seriously out of my budget.

TopStrengths: Sharp picture, quiet autofocus, good value for the price!
Weakness: It's sometimes a little slow to autofocus
After reading many reviews of this lens, I decided to add it for my Canon Digital Rebel XTi. It's been a great choice. It not only fills the frame at about half a foot, but it is also great for portrait shots as well, adding some creative blur. To me, this is simply one way to set SLR photography apart from point and shoot.

TopStrengths: Very sharp macro shots and great portraits
Weakness: Expensive
Had the lens for a month now. Great fun to play with but a but pricey if you're on a budget. Otherwise, definitely a good lens to go with my 20D.

Great Macro/Portrait Lens for a Great Price
Strengths: Light, Fast, Inexpensive, high quality glass
Weakness: None I could think of
I never owned a real macro lens before this one, although lately I have been using several professional Canon Macro systems (which I cannot afford), and I was impressed both with the autofocusing speed (it's an ultrasonic lens) and with the quality of the image. Although this is not an "L" series lens (and the price certainly shows) it is nonetheless a high quality lens. My photos are crisp, clear, don't show any signs of chromatic aberration or vignetting. Even if you don't do any macro shooting this is a great lens for portraits and it's really fast at f/2.8 allowing for an awesome depth of field. I paid $360 on Amazon and I consider that to be a very very good price for this lens.
