12.2MP, 4272x2848, SD/SDHC Card Slot - MPN: 2756B003
Strengths: Great photo quality, quick action shots, large lcd screen, comfortable grip, and lots of features such as Live view
Weakness: Slow shutter speed when in Live view, awkward position of iso
First of all, this is my first dslr, so I am not a pro, but I just love this camera. The pictures are soo much better than your typical point and shoot camera. You are able to take continuous action shots, and there is hardly any time between
shots. There are numerous features that you can control which I still am just learning about, such as the spot metering and white balance adjustment. What is great is the amount of control you want or just set it to auto and the camera does it all. The only weakness I found was that when you are in Live view mode, the camera is very slow. I thought I could use the lcd screen like my point & shoot camera but found that to be too lagging. The Live View would be good for close up shots or if you are trying to shoot something where you can't really get your eye on the camera.
All in all, this is the best prosumer camera I think. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to move up to a dslr.

TopStrengths: Wonderful image quality and great to be able to work with RAW format
Weakness: The live view is only available in manual settings.
I had a Canon point and shoot that I really loved--I wanted to graduate to a digital SLR and had heard good feedback about the Rebel series. So, far I am satisfied; but need to get more into the manual features to fully use the camera. I was also disappointed that the live view is not available when the camera is set on auto. I am getting used to using the view-finder to compose and focus, it will take some getting used to.

TopYou can auto focus in live mode.... just simply push the "*" button and wait for the beep. I've been using this auto focus feature during live view since I bought an XSI 6 months ago. Check your manual on this one for a more detailed description.
Strengths: Excellent value for the dollar and performance. Better than XTI.
Weakness: Standard lens is useless. Need up upgrade to the IS 17-85mm
This nwer XSI is great value compared to the Nikon camera. Although the XSI comes with a standard IS lens, the lens is slow and doesn't focus well but it's included in the kit now as Image Stablization.
If you are serious in taking great pictures, consider upgrading to a Canon IS 17-85mm lens. The XSI adds many new features including a longer battery life, and it's a lot better in taking clearer pictures in darker light, ISO bottom on the top compared to the XTI. Though the XTI did have a metal body, this XSI has a plastic body and the "on" led is not replaced by an ISO button.
It was really worth upgrading for me in terms of image quality and speed.
I don't recommend you buy the kit unless you get an awesome deal. I recommend the body with a Canon IS 17-85mm lens upgrade. It's all worth the price. Get a few extra batteries as well.
I haven't found a need to buy a Flash unit since the newer XSI built in flash is more than good enough for my pictures.
People have said the Nikon models are better but I found doesn't work and feel high quality.
I wish they had a video mode but I guess the price would be higher then.

TopStrengths: Large LCD screen and live view as well as the IS kit lens. Extremely easy to use for first timers.
Weakness: Price.
This is my first DSLR and just got back from two week honeymoon in Costa Rica and absolutely delighted with its performance. After reviewing the 800+ pics my wife and I have received so many compliments on the image sharpness and vibrant coloring. One recommendation is a UV lens which ended up making a huge difference on outdoor scenic shots.

TopStrengths: Quick, very minimal lag time, compact for a DSLR, Canon quality, good IS lens
Weakness: none
My wife has been using a Canon Digital Rebel (first model) and I just upgraded her to the XSi. She LOVES it. The difference is amazing: faster response and wake up time, faster shutter and definitely decreased lag time. It is smaller and lighter. Comfortable to use. We have a 18-55 canon lens but I upgraded to the new IS lens and it probably adds a little to the performance (esp lower light situations) but it definitely doesn't slow things down (which I thought might be a concern).
Bottom line - EXCELLENT CAMERA even for a semi-pro photographer!

TopStrengths: 12.2-megapixel, a live view LCD, improved autofocus, new dynamic-range controls.
Weakness: None
The new XSI has everyhing you can dream of! The best feature I like: XSi's 230,000 pixel, 3-inch LCD can be set to function in Live Mode, which permits the camera to autofocus while using the LCD as a viewfinder, without lowering the optical viewfinder reflex mirror! Perfect for macro pictures taken with a tripod. Unlike previous Rebel models, the XSi camera saves image files on SD and SDHC memory cards, which is good as SD cards are much more popular and cheaper nowadays.

TopStrengths: Very user friendly user interface, LiveView enable point and shoot like experience for novice photographer. Great picture quality. The IS kits lens work great!
Weakness: When the IS is operating the high freq noise is some what annoying. But being say that you can only hear it in a very quite studio enviroment
This is my first SLR. Been using Canon XT of my friend in the past. I decided to get my own, with my first paycheck.
There is a lot of pro review out there about this SLR. So I am just going to share my personal feel about this camera, for the rest of detail information you can just google for it.
I am total happy with this camera. It is much more advance then the Canon XT, great features, great picture quality and I just enjoy shooting with it.
BTW the sensor is very low noise despite at 12M pixel density. The picture get even better when you hook it up with a 50mm prime lens.

TopStrengths: 12.2 megapixels, IS lens, live view, 3" display, light weight body
Weakness: maximum ISO setting of 1600, faster burst mode would be nice and a larger buffer for raw capture
I have always felt Canon makes the best cameras. This one does not disappoint. Many additional features (compared to the Xti). Takes excellent low noise pictures, even at higher ISOs. I especially like the fact that my older lenses from my Canon 35 MM film camera work with it as well. For a first DSLR, this is one camera that has enough features borrowed from the higher end 40D that will allow the beginning photographer to grow into it.

TopStrengths: Great quality, easy to use
Weakness: None to date - Purchased August 2008 and love it
Better quality than expected. After 30 years of film, very pleased with this camera. The quality of print is excellent. Just wish the lens prices would come down.

TopStrengths: LIve view, need i say more?
Weakness: You have to buy a new memory car, and extra batteries if upgrading from the xti.
Light weight camera body and a really cute shutter sound when you take a pic. It is a lot easier on the hands for long term use. I have an xti and am really glad i got a good deal on a upgrade. user friendly and the large lcd screen on the back of the camera is GREAT.
You need to read direstions on how to use and find live view.
remember:
You have to buy a new memory car, and extra batteries if upgrading from the xti.

TopStrengths: - better ergonomy than 350D and 450D, - good image quality, - possibility to change ISO settings in viewfinder, - 3-inches LCD, - good autofocus
Weakness: - ISO 3200 absence, - Menu key in uncomfortable place.
I've used Canon EOS Xt (350D) earlier. 450D is better younger brother of this camera. I'm contented of my XSi beacause I have good quality of photos for a quite good money. Photography is my biggest passion and in future I want to buy more advanced Canon camera, for example EOS 50D. Effects of my work with Canon (and Panasonic earlier) on: www.rafalgdak.pl

Weakness: price
awesome camera, so far so good
took 200 pics in 2 days
this is the best entry level SLr canon made
Nkon has to do something :)
cant resist
I can give 11 out of 10 for this camera

TopStrengths: Good feel on the camera but that is it.
Weakness: material used on camera is very easily scratch. specially around the pop up flash. 2.-image quality in auto mode is terrible, my dinosaur sony dsc10 camera takes more cleaner sharper pictures.
I have sinned by selling my nikon d50, and crossing over to Canon. I should have never sold my d50. anyways, first of all, I love this web site and I'm gonna to support it by telling all my friends about it. thank you dcresource. about the xsi, stay away from it. for the money, at least you should be able to take clear and sharp images in auto mode but it never did for me. although i am a novice user who understands the mechanics and methodology of photography, no matter what i did (using tripod) the images were disappointing. However, in manual mode and couple of tweaks here and there, the camera worked well but remember for the price, my old d50 took superb pictures in auto mode. i ordered a d80 and returning the xsi because i am coming back to nikon. this will never happen. i will always love nikon cameras. thanks again DC!!

TopI had a Cannon AE1P for many years and then someone stole it out of my truck. I have not replaced it yet and want to go with the XSi. Thanks for the positive feed on your experience.
The AE1P did a great job both closeup and distant shots. Never a problem until the Thief needed drugs and took it. He took me for almost 3K in equipment. I wanted to cry.

This is something that kind of annoys me about people who buy a DSLR. Although I am a novice in the DSLR world (never took classes, have only read books and played with the settings) the whole point is to bring the camera out of the Auto mode and work with the other more manual settings. Go with a canon G10 if you want something that takes great Auto pictures (and it also has a manual mode just in case). Otherwise, start getting out of the Auto settings and start experiencing a great camera! You’ll get the hang of it. In the beginning it’s difficult to guess the settings but after some time you’ll pick up the pace and become faster. Having a DSLR and only using it in manual mode is like having a Ferrari and never going about 35mph.
Strengths: kit lens is better than before, 3 inch lcd, live view
Weakness: not worth 300 more to upgrade from xti
bought this for my wife, but she thinks it's not worth the extra 300 to upgrade from xti. It has better pixel which doesn't matter anyway. Live view helps a little but not whole lot. The kie lens is way better than the xti kit lens. Should have waited for sometime till the price come down a little bit.

TopStrengths: good
Weakness: not bad
This is the best camera anyone could ever own. Even photographers for that matter. I would reccommend this to any camera enthusiast or general soccer mom. This is truly a "must have"

TopStrengths: Good Quality Photos, Inexpensive
Weakness: Lightweight
My first dslr camera. Got the package that came with the kit lens and the 55-250mm lens. Kit lens is very light and cheapy feeling but the other lens is good and sturdily built. The camera is lightweight, which for me, is not all that great. I would rather have a heavy camera that is built to last. Overall a good camera. The 3.5 fps is also nice.

TopStrengths: IS kit lens, VERY user friendly controls, LCD panel is exquisite, easy to use, very sharp and low noise at 100 ISO
Weakness: NOISE NOISE NOISE! Past 100 ISO, there is a steep drop in sharpness and image quality (at least in my case).
Live view is overrated and very difficult to use in most situations, although it does have (very slow) live autofocus.
Also, the kit lens is pretty soft at both ends of the focal range. The middle is ok, but no surprises there.
Overall, I love this camera at 100 ISO. If it's too dark for 200 ISO, bust out the flashes, because the noise is kinda painful. On a sunny day though, life is good.
I'm still glad I bought it, seeing as the 5D II is about $2000 more... but one of these days...

TopStrengths: very nice
Weakness: No issues
This is stylishly compact.I found clunky and hard to close at times, despite the incorporation of a grip that ought to make it easier to manipulate.
something you can expect to deal with if compactness and style are high on your priority list.

TopStrengths: High Resolution with low noise, 3" LCD, Excellent Kit Lens, Live View
Weakness: Price a little high, no port for external strobes
The Canon XSi is an incremental improvement in so many ways from the Canon XTi that it makes for worthwhile upgrade. The new image stabilized kit lens is both sharper and far more versatile than any previous Canon kit lens. It even has better macro performance. The bigger 3" LCD with Live View Function (compose your shots using the LCD) is not implemented particularly well for action shots, but it is a real boon for still life or shooting over crowds. The faster autofocus and larger viewfinder are of course welcomed. Also switching from compact flash to SD/SDHC memory makes sense at this point for the smaller form factor.
Most importantly of all, the Canon XSi shines when it comes down to image quality. I threw on my Canon 100mm Macro and the level of detail it was resolving was quite simply spectacular. There are few lenses sharper and to see a true macro with 12 megapixels of resolution behind it creates quite the impact. Practically a microscope! If you like big prints and a want a camera without a lot of bulk you will do well by the XSi.

TopStrengths: Light, small, feature rich for price point
Weakness: Cost (currently), no "no flash" button, soft out of the box (but that is a Canon thing), plasticky cheap feel
Very pleased so far with the 450D. If you are upgrading like so many from a P&S, you will want to immediately go into user settings and up the sharpness quite a bit, as images are relatively soft on default (imo). For my first hundred shots, could not figure out why none of my shots were tack sharp, and that was the answer.
Don't buy this thinking Live View works...it really is a horrible implementation and nothing like a P&S live view. If you want Live View on a DSLR, get a Sony.
Love the ISO specific button, menus look great, wish resolution on the LCD was better. Built in flash is fine, but not great.
I was surprised at how good the viewfinder looks compared to the 40D. Not a huge difference there.
Construction is the cheapest plastic you can imagine, but that does not bother me personally.
Feels very fast in usage.
Overall, I feel I will enjoy learning to use this camera, and would recommend waiting for price to drop (it already is) since you will be paying a premium right now.

THE GOOD: Excellent photo quality for its class; better-than-average speed. THE BAD: Maximum ISO 1600; huge spot-for-spot metering. THE BOTTOM LINE: It doesnt stand out for its feature set or design, but the Canon EOS Rebel XSi delivers on performance and photo quality.

After testing the Canon EOS 450D I am really satisfied with the camera. It is a perfect camera for everybody. If you are just starting with (digital) photography or if you are a bit more experienced, and whether or not you switch from a compact camera, the Canon 450D enables you to take excellent pictures. Moreover, it comes at an extremely affordable price.

While many companies tout the capabilities of their big, expensive professional cameras, Canon's flagship is a Rebel. The Rebel XSi showcases many new technologies, currently besting the semi-pro camera in the line in several areas. Its 12.2 megapixel sensor exceeds the resolution of the EOS 40D, the new Live View mode uses phase-detect and contrast-detect autofocus modes, and the Rebel XSi's kit...

The Canon EOS Rebel XSi is a very good entry-level digital SLR. It offers very good photo quality (with the appropriate tweaks), lighting fast performance, live view, and a large LCD display. Still, the Rebel XSi is a solid choice for those...

Beyond higher resolution, a bigger screen and Live View, you also get a larger viewfinder, faster continuous shooting,...

Awesome Camera!
Strengths: Picture quality (of course), 12 MP, ease-of-use, SDHC card capability, big LCD screen, compact, and relatively light weight.
Weakness: None that I know of yet. I don't foresee any either...
I'm a family photographer, taking photos of my kids and family. This was rated #1 Digital SLR in C.R. and it is a great camera. I highly recommend this if you want to go with a digital SLR camera.
