HP50G Graphing Calculator Good Product

Strengths: Can do so much stuff.

Weakness: Takes more time to get through menus to do the stuff.

I bought this calculator to replace a broken HP48GX. I love that it can do everything the old model could do and more. However, many core functions are, by default, nested into a bunch of menus that make it more time consuming to use. On the plus side, the default settings can be changed to make it work more like the older models. As for appearance and feel, I don't like the new display (my first one was very crooked & the replacement, though better, is still slightly off). Also the chassis seems to be more like a Texas Instruments, which I don't like, than the old HP48 series.

One awsome calculator!

Strengths: Buttons work more like the 48, not the 49. SD slot for extra memory Comes with cable to connect to PC via USB port and manual on CD

Weakness: No full printed manual Have to do some research on your own to use some of the really advanced features as the manual does not cover them.

This calc is stellar. I'm sure most people looking at this have had previous versions of HP calculators. This one is the best yet. I used to use a 48GX, but the keys started giving me problems (after 8 years). This is the first HP that I know of that can also work in Algebraic mode if you're more used to TI calcs, but the first thing I did was put it in RPN! Then downloaded the latest firmware, put it on an SD card and flashed my own.

It took a little getting used to just due to the different placement of the buttons and some of the different commands, but now I'm about as good at it as I am with the 48. When I went back to use my 48 (the 50 wasn't around) I couldn't believe how cheap the screen looked. The one on the 50 is so much better.

This calc is way better than any TI, if you're in the market, you won't be disappointed by this beauty. I also had great service from the cheapest place on the net, keenzo.com

Yes, this calculator is great except for one minor thing:

The rs232 port, I'm not talking about the usb port, there
is no information I can locate anywhere in any of the manuals
on this accessory cable that's, "available seperately".
The usb cable that ships with the calculator works ok, but
where's the info on the RS232 cable? HP really dropped the
ball on this one !

The HP50G is a robust graphing scientific calculator

Strengths: RPN, Dynamic computer algebra, USB connectivity, SD card option, IR and the serial port is back. Screen is BIG and bright. Fast, reliable, EXCELLENT keyboard feeling. Deluxe case !!

Weakness: The serial cable is not included.

I have an HP49G+ and now I bought this mainly for the much better keyboard feeling and the serial connectivity option. Due to its black color it reminds more of a TI instead of an HP but this is not a problem. Some comments found on other sites about the display are not true. It is as bright as that of the HP49G+ and has the same functionality but somehow it fits more information. The HP50G formats a 512 MB SD card faster than the HP49G+ and it feels a little heavier due to the 4 AAA batteries (the 49G+ uses only three). The keyboard is SOOOO SOFT and has nothing to do with that of the 49G+ (no noise at all when you press buttons, no missing keystrokes). The soft deluxe case is a plus and the CD has everything you need to get you going. The serial cable is missing and I have to make one myself since HP does not have one yet in the market. In any case, if you are a student or scientist you need one. The menus are better than those found on the titanium TI89, and the HP50G is not as heavy as the TI is. Not to mention that the lettering brings to mind that of the good old HP48GX. We all know that HP has been making calculators for many many years and now they are back with a robust product that is here to stay and can win the competition. Add its price of $124 with free shipping and no tax and then ask yourself: what more do I need? Nothing. Go get one!!

Best calculator for a Civil Engineer

Strengths: Great equation library and built-in functions. Good size display. Durable (nice protective case). Easy to use.

Weakness: Key-in data maybe confusing due to keytime option. Manual is not that great. Everybody wants to take a look at it.

Two years letters after a fiasco with the 49G (horrible keyboard), I just recently purchased the 50G, upgrading from a 48G. I am very impressed with it. In the beginning, I though it would be about the same as a 48G; however, the display feels much bigger the keys feel so much better (turn off keytime). If you have always used hp, like I had, it will be easy to use this one and you will type faster with it. I believe that, once you use RPN(reverse polish notation) you will never go back. Moreover, programming is still user friendly and thousands of modules out there for you to grab. However, the best new tool is the additional memory sd card slot. I have one sd card for each one of my projects and can go back and for without any trouble. Also, the backup battery is a life saver for any engineer.
